Amsterdam
Head straight to the Brouwerij ‘t IJ. It’s easy to find as it sits under a large windmill. If you walk from the central train station to the museum one is almost half way there.

The hours are unpub-like 3:00 – 8:00 pm but the environment is friendly, social, and local. It’s a no frills drinking place whose main focus is beer production. Brewing 2000 liter batches one gets an intimate beverage.

The next spot for on-the-premise brewed beer is Amsterdamse Stoombierbrouwerij “De Bekeerde Suster near Nieuwmarkt. Great people watching spot. We saw a man get arrested for telling a couple they were in love. A wit is the recommended style to order.

Home to kolsch the city’s unique take on beer and beer service. Served cold and frosty in small easyily drinkable quantities of 20 cl.

6 July Pete Jordan’s Dishwasher Event at the American Book Center

Pete Jordan read from his book Dishwasher and screened short films at the American Book Center in Amsterdam. Something’s Brewing BIER accompanied him providing specially designed Dishwasher slipcovers for the event. An engaging evening of suds.

Pete’s memoir is about living life to the fullest and following one’s bliss. It’s a tale without compromise, a sociological exploration of the American landscape and its people.

Judith Thissen (Media en Cultuurwetenschappen) en de Amerikaanse kunstenares Edith Abeyta (Los Angeles) organiseren op 26 juni een open atelier met bierproeverij, naar aanleiding van hun onderzoeks-project Something’s Brewing BIER waarin de commercialisering van de culturele sector wordt onderzocht. Dit geschiedt door een eigen biermerk te lanceren waarmee kleine culturele evenementen gesponsord worden in Nederland en de VS.
Doel van deze samenwerking is om vanuit de praktijk een grounded theory over commercialiseringprocessen binnen kunst en cultuur te ontwikkelen, waarbij een gedeelde nieuwsgierigheid naar de doorwerking van de consumptiemaatschappij binnen het culturele veld het uitgangspunt is.

Het project maakt onderdeel uit van CO-OPs: Exploring new territories in art and science dat door NWO geïnitieerd is binnen het programma Transformaties in Kunst en Cultuur.

It’s not unusual for artists to work at Universities, it’s where many get their start but the Something’s Brewing Studio was not located in the art department nor is it typical for the University of Utecht to host artists-in-residence but here was the Something’s Brewing Art and BIER Lab located in a partially occuipied building hosting what could be described as a “Happy Hour” disguised as an open atelier or a chance to discuss and share our project.

22 and 23 June De Kift at Oerol Festival

22 and 23 June Something’s Brewing joined forces with De Kift at the Oerol Festival on the Dutch island of Terschelling for two nights of song and drinke.

The island can only be reached by boat.

The festival has had an annual presence on the island for twenty-five years hosting 50,000 people throughout its ten days.

It’s focus is music and theater. The Peer Group put on an amazing site specific portable theater work in a field which could only be reached by foot or bicycle. The time of day was specific to the performance with the sun beginning to set and the sheep heading in. The performance ended with the audience relocating the wooden structures referencing the historical moving of barns by whole towns to follow their sheep.

Our first night we spent settling in, bicycling round the island, and getting to know our generous host Jan de Jong of the Vijfpoort, a local pub with a long history of excellent live music and receptive to a BIER giveaway.

During the day we spent our time promoting BIER and De Kift “Ontmoete & Groete”

We would also go see the band.

Friday and Saturday night the BIER table was set-up and free bottles given away to all who purchased tickets and posed with the band. Designs by Luis Banuelos, Juan Angel Chavez, Ursula Kammer-Fox, Radah, and two anonymous designs submitted by davidmichaellee’s students were used.

10 June Exhibition for Documentation

After much negoiation and a late night meeting on 7 June it was decided an exhibition of the Something’s Brewing project would take place at the residency space in north Holland. Earlier it had been communicated Judith and I would not be doing an exhibition as our concession of the reduction of the exhibition to one week was not accepted. It was conveyed to us the space’s funding was contingent upon a Something’s Brewing event – quality and content hardly seemed relevant and as we were to find out consent was even less important.

The show must go on even if there is no art by the artist so some had to be found and quickly. Who better to exploit than students. Photographs of the brewery had been taken by one of the students we had been living with and a digital video interview had been shot of Bob and I by the program’s student reporters. There was still beer in bottles and boxes and images from this website to incorporate. During the meeting it was determined I would make the necessary labels for the opening. Of course, I refused but did allow them to let the banner which I had not finished and read “(when hegemony just won’t do)” to remain on the floor during the opening.

We requested the following statement be read during the opening in English:

Thank you for coming this afternoon. You expected an exhibition by the Something’s Brewing BIER team. Unfortunately we had to cancel that exhibition last week because our project has been hijacked by the very forces that we are fighting. In other words, hegemony worked. The statement was read as well as projected. It was explained to viewers the statement we provided was art and meant to cause confusion.

Arriving at the reception thirty minutes late I missed the projected statement and unable to understand Dutch I could not respond to this further misrepresentation. Fortunately, the student reporters were documenting the charade for posterity and to justify funding so we were able to find out exactly what was said. Rolling, (long pause) action. (Too bad they were only able to rustle up a handfull of extras. Twenty people in total were there many of which were associated with the overall program.)

As I stood in the back of the gallery the director came up to me and said she thought it was fair. Snapping a few photos for my own documentation I waited for the end, removed the felt letters from the banner, rolled up the ten meters of burlap, and walked to the train station.

When Bourdieu and I were talking about cultural politics in the US and how they’re connected to ‘big-time’ politics, things were far from settled. What we saw as a threat then, has since gained incredible force…Practically all institutions have accepted the domination of the public sphere by corporate interests, many of them without offering much resistance and without embarassment.
